Day Before Dental Surgery:

A nurse will call/text you the day prior to your child’s dental surgery appointment. They will provide you with an arrival time, review your child’s medical history, go over preoperative instructions and any questions you have. Our team will also reach out via text, providing you with our nurse’s direct phone number.  The preoperative instructions are based on your child’s age, medical history, and time of day of the surgery. No eating after midnight!! Your child may wear loose comfortable clothing to the appointment. Please no make up or fancy hair styles.

Day Of Dental Surgery: Generally, 2 Hours, Give Or Take

You will be greeted upon arrival and asked to complete any necessary paperwork. Any financials will be explained and collected by our administrative team. We provide an engaging experience for your child by getting to know them, developing a relationship with them and distracting from the dental setting with prizes and activities.

Once you and your child have been checked in, you will go into a consultation room, which we encourage family members to join. This is where you will meet our team of doctors and nurses. They will review your child’s medical history, get vitals, explain the procedure with any x-rays and previous treatment plan provided, and happily answer any questions you may have.

When the time is right, one of our doctors and/or nurses will come to get your child while you remain in the consultation room. Parents are not allowed to walk their child back to the treatment area (this is for your child’s safety).

Your child will breathe in a special gas to put them to sleep. We describe this as candy air and let them pick the type of candy scent. Once they are asleep, we use IV medication and a breathing tube. This way the patient is unaware of any needles and will not feel any pain.

Once vitals are recorded by the anesthesiologist and nurses, the pediatric dentist will begin the dental treatment. All dental treatment will be taken care of at this time. Dental time is typically around 60 minutes.

During the dental treatment, our nurse will let you know how your child did while going to sleep. They will also review the post operative instructions and how to care for your child when they wake up. You will be able to move your vehicle to our side entrance, for a seamless exit when it’s time to go home.

After Dental Surgery: Recovery typically take 15-20 minutes before leaving the office

Following surgery, your child will be taken to the Postoperative Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). Our nurses will carefully monitor your child until they wake up for the anesthesia. During this time, the dentist will come to speak with you to review the dental treatment completed, post operative concerns and next appointment with your primary dentist.

At the appropriate time, you are bought to your child’s bedside. Parents should expect to see their child awaken from anesthesia, but groggy. At times children may wake up confused, disoriented, and angry. It is normal for a child to be cranky, cry, and kick. In most cases, your child will not remember this stage

While your child is emerging from anesthesia, it is important you remain very calm and reassure your child they are safe. We will do our best to get them to your familiar face and touch and the familiar scent of your car. We are not rushing you! This helps your child to feel comfort by being in a familiar setting. It is important to remember every child wakes up differently. We will make accommodation as needed specifically for your child. Sometimes children will be escorted in a wheelchair for safety concerns. Most of all, please use kind, loving words, be patient, and trust your medical professionals.
